Training

As a construction worker in the ever-evolving and hazardous industry, having current skills at the industry standard is a time consuming and costly challenge. With the responsibility a full-time job and providing for a family, taking leave from work to attend school is not practical for construction workers.  The majority of workers do not have the time or the money to afford the training required, to successfully advance in the industry. it is the unfortunate circumstance for many non-union construction workers.

As a Laborer of Local 1216, training is provided at no cost to the member and can attend class in the off-season. In some apprenticeship situations, the worker is still earning while learning. Training and education is a top priority for Local 1216. Members are trained to master skills and educated with proficient knowledge of regulations and safety standards of the building and construction trades industry.

At the Drexel J. Thrash Training and Apprenticeship Center, the Ohio Laborers’ Training Center provides quality education offering a curriculum for all construction trades that the Local 1216 represents. Since 1969, its mission is to provide first-rate specialized training to members in the construction and building trades.

Sitting on 119 acres of rolling hills and scenic grounds, the Drexel J. Thrash Training Center is a quiet, tranquil facility to conduct training sessions. Members receive hands-on training in courses that include but not limited to, hazardous materials remediation, remote tunnels, confined spaces, concrete work water mains and surveying!  Local 1216 Laborers have a competitive edge over untrained laborers. Being a highly skilled Laborers will open doors to new opportunity and advancement.  

The facility is sponsored by the Illinois Laborers' District Councils in conjunction with the Associated General Contractors of Illinois, Central Illinois Builders of AGC, Southern Illinois Builders of AGC, Northern Illinois Builders of AGC and individual contractors throughout the state who contribute to the Fund.

A trained workforce helps employers compete with higher productivity and quality, and helps workers earn more and work more safely.
